BEERflections ~ Hurricanes VB Welcomes Ballast Point Brewing to Florida

Knowing a new craft brewery is coming to my home state and my hometown is always cause for celebration. Beer diversity is beautiful; whether it tickles your specific fancy or not is just a matter of individual semantics. Regarding Ballast Point Brewing out of San Diego, California, there truly is no ground for semantics. Good beer is good and great beer is great. Ballast Point falls firmly within the latter camp. At the 2010 World Beer Cup, they walked away with three gold medals, tying Baird Brewing of Numazu, Shizuoka, Japan for most gold medals awarded to a single brewery. Ballast Point was also awarded the esteemed honor of Small Brewery of the Year. Considering the number of wonderful small breweries throughout the USofA and considering this is the World Beer Cup, the world, it is an award of grandeur and promise.

One aspect of Ballast Point which has not landed on the shores of Florida yet and may never is their micro-distilled spirits. Very limited releases of very small batches also critically acclaimed, I look forward to eventually somehow someway being able to dapple in their spirited side of flavor exploration and ingenuity. But in the meantime, there be tasty beers to explore and explore I did in sight, sound, and body.

From coast to coast, in eleven exclusively JJ Taylor accounts across Florida on Wednesday, October 13th, 2010 five tastetacular Ballast Point beers were released unto thirsty burgundians throughout. A rollout more than an event for this round, it was the perfect modus operandi to introduce a new brewery and their beers to the sunshine state without over saturating the market and consequently dooming the merry venture to rapid oblivion. Nothing can be more personally frustrating and discouraging than watching a good brewery with good beer fall between the cracks, nay pushed, due to lack of overall commitment, hindsight, and foresight. Based equally on years of personal experience, I can say without a doubt Ballast Point is in excellent hands with JJ Taylor and consequently, Hurricane Grille & Wings of Vero Beach, Florida. One of only two accounts (for now) on the Treasure Coast, the other is the esteemed Vine & Barley of St. Lucie West. Two radically different venues, both have at their heart the most important life-stream of good beer, good friends, and good times.

Being an all business day kickoff, I ran through my usual morning routine of reading, writing, blogging, and working out before prepping to embrace the day’s festivities. Looking forward to Tim Hebeler’s arrival later that afternoon along with some of my super awesome posse of peeps and a few resident members of the JJ Taylor family, yours beerly rolled in around 5pmish. Camera in hand, my first mission was documenting the gorgeous tap handles that were smartly lined up in a neat little row. Together and individually, I memorialized their maritime styled taps of beerly glory for all to appreciate.

They were:
  • Yellowtail Pale Ale – soft, gentle, and breadly sweet, she is a fine tribute to the Kolsch style who will reward the patient drinker with layer upon layer of subtle flavors.
  • Wahoo Wheat – an American inspired wheat, her supple flavors of tropical fruits freshly picked, sliced, and ready for eating is equally matched by a softly sweet bready mouthfeel.
  • Big Eye IPA – an IPA which exemplifies balance between malty caramelized sweetness, crispy golden brown melba, and a never-ending brisk grassy hoppiness.
  • Calico Amber Ale – a real crowd pleaser, she demands your attention with clean pervasive bitterness which never overwhelms and is parried by a crisp crunchy sweetness ending in an aptly thirst-inducing dryness.
  • Sculpin IPA – for the hophead in all of us, she is equally clean and hoptastic with bright freshly sliced and squeezed white grapefruit, lemon, and straight from the west coast, pine needles aplenty.

Without a single doubt, all beers were good but I really dug the Sculpin that day having been hop-deprived for a bad long while. Hit the spot she did and then some.

All new beers to my palate, tasting notes were nonetheless put on the wayside for the simple pleasure of savoring new beers amidst friends and family (you rock, Dad!) without having to divert attentions to engage pen and paper. Tasting notes are still to come, but in regards to Ballast Point Brewing in Florida, time is on my side. Also hopefully evident by now is the pervasive maritime fisherman’s theme. From the beers to the brewery to the brewery staffed fishing team, the deep blue is near and dear to their hearts, a sentiment any Floridian worth their salt will echo unconditionally. Me? Oh yes! I grew up on the Indian River and spent many hours of many days of many years fishing within the embrace of Mother Ocean.

And so, in no hurry to be anywhere else, I slowly surely supped my way through their five tastetacular beers, a bounty worthy of the Treasure Coast. All it takes to enjoy these unburied gems is a glass and a thirst, something this beer geek is never without. The future is bright, indeed.

Cigar City Brew News

Hey Guys,

We have a little something special planned for next Friday, November 5th. We are very happy to welcome David Gremmel, and his wonderful cheeses to the brewery for a very special tasting from 5-7pm. Whole Foods will be on hand and have the featured cheeses available for purchase and the CCB beers featured will be available in the tasting room.

Be sure to sign up at Whole Foods if you can attend!

This event is limited to 40 people.

This week in the tasting room we put Vanilla Maduro on tap in place of Oatmeal Raisin Cookie. We will have more Oatmeal Raisin Cookie in a week or two for pints and growlers and soon you will be able to find it at your favorite beer retailer to enjoy at home! It's scheduled to be bottled in the few months, along with Cubano Espresso, Jose' Marti and White Oak Jai-Alai IPA 12 oz. all in 4 packs!

There are a few new treatments in the tasting room and more that will be turning up in the coming weeks, right now we have the Coco Loco and Seabass Passion on tap. Coco Loco is a cocoa and coconut infused Bolita Double Brown Ale. The Seabass Passion infuses a blend of fruits with an ale containing multiple layers of complexity that tingles the senses. Jose' Marti is back, so is Humidor IPA both of which we are pouring growlers of again so bring them by and let us fill them up for you!

Coming Soon! The first creations of Ben Romano, our Pilot Brewer who has been working on a few new beers for us to enjoy. Ben has been brewing small batches on our 45 gallon pilot system and we can't wait to have them on tap!

Labels were approved for our Collaboration beer with the guys from Grassroots (Denmark) and Hill Farmstead (VT)

Described as a “high gravity black ale brewed with Ty Ty honey, copious amounts of hops and aged on toasted Spanish Cedar.” 11.2% ABV to be packaged in mixed 12/12oz. of each in a case of 24. It should be out sometime this fall.

Hopefully we will be able to get some tasting notes soon!

Cheers!

BEERflections ~ 2nd Annual Oktoberfest @ Broken Barrel Tavern

When one thinks of Germany and Oktoberfest, images of lederhosen, dirndl, Brezn, Würstl, Blaukraut, Hendl, Reiberdatschi, and of course beer come to mind. Lots of beer in 3L dimpled glass steins raised in toast, thumped on large long wooden tables to cheers, boisterous song, and drunk in copious proportions. Take said imagery, add a bit of Florida sunshine and one arrives not at the Theresienwiese but at the Broken Barrel Tavern. Between October 8th and 9th, there was much merry made, Oktoberfest beers quaffed and classic German dish snarfed.

Never one to miss out on a beer event, especially one being hosted by Broken Barrel Tavern, with Marc Boland’s generous assistance, we assembled a large long wooden table (relatively speaking) of beer minded peeps whose passion for good food and good times is equally revered. I arrived early (surprise surprise) to secure our table of Oktoberfest awesomeness which, thanks to a quick email that morning, was all ready and waiting for us. Cruising US1 north with the windows down, the sun shining, and just a wee nip of chill in the air put me in the proper frame of mind for hours of tasty fun. To top it all off was a cask of Schneider-Sohn Organic Edel-weisse which I shall delve into a bit later.

Lo and behold, as I wandered in, my waiter decked out in lederhosen led me to my table in waiting. As we made our way, someone called out my name. Looking for its source, I was delight to see Darrell and Suz. Seated amidst friends and I do believe a relative or two, they had enjoyed an equally picturesque cruise north to partake of and share the goodness that is Broken Barrel. Whereas I arrived on four wheels, they arrived on two wheels. Previously unaware of the day’s festivities, they nonetheless had a grand time, responsibly of course, before heading out to further explore such a beautiful day. Stopping by to say hello before goodbye, Darrell left me with a generous 20spot to enjoy a beer or two on him. No worries there my dear, for a beer or two I definitely enjoyed. It’s too bad you couldn’t stay longer, but there will be other festivities of a beery nature to enjoy together.

Just as my waiter was decked out in lederhosen, so too were all the gents sporting some variation on the traditional German garb while the ladies enjoyed creative interpretations on the traditional dirndl. Some were cute, some were flirtations, but all were in good fun. Considering the original Oktoberfest as with all Oktoberfests after and beyond are a time of celebration, community, and fun, there was plenty to be had at the Barrel that Saturday.

Why Saturday and not Friday?

Because on Saturday and not on Friday the glorious barrel of Edel-weisse was to be tapped at 3pm sharp. There was no way I or my fellow peeps were going to miss out. No way, no sirree. As 3pm rounded the bend, Kevin announced the imminent tapping and like star-struck groupies our table scrambled outside to witness, document, and taste the very much alive Organic Edel-weisse from the vaunted Schneider-Sohn Brewery. Under clear blue skies and random puffs of white, a finer day could nowhere be found. As pitchers of Edel-weisse filled pint after pint, we cupped our glasses in reverence as we retreated once more to our table. Inside, exclamations of yummy delight ensued in chorus along with a few irresistible trips to the cask in hope of another pint before her 30L were tapped out. Being able to secure a glass before there was none to secure for my pal Jim, upon arrival, I could tell by his giddy grin that it was indeed well received.

Not to be outclassed, there was also great food to be had and lots of it. All day and evening long, fest-goers had the choice of an Oktoberfest menu created just for that day along with the generous burgundian delights of the Barrel’s full menu. As others soon discovered what I already knew, hour after hour, a hungry chorus of scintillating food porn indulgence rumbled about our table in shameless pleasure. Within all beer geeks resides the foodie, a truth I have found evident time and time again. From smoked wings to pulled smoked chicken sliders and beyond, morsel after glorious morsel passed through lips quivering in burgundian bliss.

As afternoon gave way to evening, farewells were drawn out as long as possible as the upcoming crush of Gator alumni loomed in anticipation of that evening’s game. Even so, it’s not over till it’s over, or at least until raffles are drawn and yours beerly actually won something. That’s right, I actually won something! A Samuel Adams t-shirt (t-shirt whore that I am) and thanks to Marc’s lucky spoils, a 16oz perfect pint glass. Though we had accumulated a sizeable stash of raffle tickets thanks to many a beer quaffed, no more winners were drawn while I remained. The last of our troupe, Eric, Melissa, and I lingered but as the warmth and community of a large group sharing good times eventually passed so too did our desire to linger. The time had come to emerge into the cool night air. Full in more than just my tummy, with a rejuvenated heart and soul, I once more took to cruising US1, this time south, to home and Mr. D.

As always, my time at Broken Barrel Tavern was priceless. Kevin and his staff are always fabulous and the food once more sent these senses into flavor euphoria. Thanks to Duncan for the three bottles of homebrew; they were all three savored in respectful thirst. Marc, you rock. And to all my peeps who answered the call of good beer, good food, and good times…I couldn’t and wouldn’t ask for better friends for surely none exist. Until next time, prost!

BEERflections ~ 3rd Annual Treasure Coast Beer Fest

(sweet sweet sunny days)

A beer fest anyone can do but a beer fest done well cannot be done by just anyone. This lesson in beeriness and social conviviality was learnt thanks to a very special group of people over the last two years. A late-comer after the first year, it has been my very distinct personal pleasure to participate in, document, and celebrate the timeless communion of good beer and good people in the name of some near-and-dear charitable causes. September 11th 2010 marked the 3rd Annual Treasure Coast Beer Fest, brain-child and baby of the BeerWorks Charitable Foundation. A close-knit group of beer-minded peeps, their mission is to spread the love for quality artisanal beers while giving back to the very community which makes our dreams, our passion a living reality. I am truly blessed to be an active member and participant not once but twice, a joy to share in reminiscent prose.

Not one to sit along the sidelines of anything involving beer, my ambassadorial skills was put to the test as the official head of PR for 2010. In my world, PR doesn’t stand for Press Release but instead for first, foremost, and always, Public Relations. Just as anyone can do a beer fest, to do it well is more than flashy posters, catchy ads, and pompous posing. Public relations are about the public, and for our beerfest that is the community of the Treasure Coast and the community of brewers, breweries, and distributors whose passion for the fermentable made our Treasure Coast Beer Fest possible. And for this year’s charitable recipients, a valued act of selfless consideration: Dogs & Cats Forever, Harvest Food & Outreach Center, Alzheimer’s Memory Walk, Michael’s Message, and Learn To Read of St. Lucie County.

Notably absent last year was Southern Eagle Distributing, but this year they proudly represented many crafty breweries of flavor diversity found within their portfolio. Taking the lead once more was JJ Taylor Distributing and their very own beer ambassador, Tim Hebeler. Without Tim and the many fine members of the JJ Taylor family and their superfantastic portfolio of beers and breweries, we simply could not have done without. Truly sincerely, thank you. Certainly not least was Republic National whose smattering of beers included many a new staple to their portfolio alongside a solid standing of their regulars. Overall there were close to 60 different breweries/brewers pouring an eclectic mix of almost 200 different and tasty beers. It was a shame FL Micro Bev and Micro Man were absent but maybe next year. In the meantime, there be beer to wax poetic on and philosophize over.

One time was fabulous enough, but twice is beyond even fantabulous. What we have here is ground-breaking tastebud-pleasing heart-pounding goosebump-inducing beervana. Or as they like to be called, Sweetwater. Yes, once again to our humble blessing Sweetwater graced the Treasure Coast with a flavorific array of beers. A tasting hot spot, the likes of their 420 Extra Pale Ale, IPA, Blue, Motor Boat, and Sch’Wheat pleased many a palate. Pinch me all you want, even now a solid month after, and I’ll still be able to tell you it wasn’t a dream.

Also high on the list of beer coveting was the hot to trot Cigar City Brewing of Tampa, FL. That’s right. Not only does the sunshine state know how to rock the beaches, ride the waves, and populate the tiki bars, we know how to roll with the beer, too. Forget the table. Pft! Who needs a table?! Certainly not Cigar City as they descended upon the Fort Pierce City Hall Parking Garage in their van of kegly delights. Pouring from the taps were Maduro, Jai Alai IPA, Humidor Jai Alai IPA, Good Gourd, Jose Marti, and Guava Grove. Suffice to say, though the van may have arrived on a full tank, they certainly left on empty, beer that is.

Not to be left out, there was many a tastetacular table, some I am horribly ashamed to not being able to visit. A travesty to be sure, I’d rather not talk about it. Instead, allow me a moment or two to send a sudsy shout-out to some, certainly not all, and beg forgiveness for those I forget to list:
Terrapin, Samuel Adams, The Bruery, Diageo for bringing me the Guinness Foreign Extra Stout, Stone, Oskar Blues, Dogfish Head, Funky Buddha and their brand-spanking new brewpub, Corner Café & Brewery and Matt for bringing his always classy beers, PBR and the funtacular cornhole corner, Abita, Lazy Magnolia, Holy Mackerel, Southern Tier, Victory, and so many more.

Keeping the homebrew dream alive were the Treasure Coast Brewmasters along with the Palm Beach Draughtsman while yours beerly and Awesome Alex manned the Beer 101 table. A venue to pick our minds on all things beer and homebrew, we couldn’t have done it without the generosity of BX Depot, Ale Street News, and Awesome Alex for patiently putting up with the roving social antics of…you guessed it, me. Camera flashing, amidst savoring tasty brews and socializing with my peeps, those four hours flew by fun and furious. Of course, I had been there since 8amish to help set-up and stayed well past 5pmish to help clean up. So personally it was more like eleven hours of fun with a quick burst of synergistic magic in the middle where dreams become reality and all the headache inducing preparation paid off beyond even our wildest dreams.

Not to be forgotten or neglected, I’d like to add a separate thanks to Julie and the fine folks at All About Beer for putting up with my pestering and graciously listing our event on your website. Likewise, I’d also like to thank Ale Street News, DRAFT, Rate Beer, Beer Advocate… and I think that covers it for sources outside the Treasure Coast for going above and beyond. Locally, I’d like to thank Robert and Channel 10 for once more doing a fantastic job promoting our event of good natured joviality and charity. To Scripps and your various journals of press, thank you. To Jack FM and all others, I still don’t know jack and much appreciated.

Ok, now where was I…

The 3rd Annual Treasure Coast Beer Fest was an overwhelming success. Previous faults were corrected and notes were taken on what to keep and what to change for next year. Oh yes, there will be a 4th Annual Treasure Coast Beer Fest. Ready those calendars for more fun in the Florida sun with ample shade and really damn good beer. Know it.

The fest may have ended at 5pm on that Saturday afternoon, but that doesn’t mean the festivities were anywhere near set to end. A generously helpful and enthusiastic participant in this year’s fest was JoJo’s Raw Bar and Grille of downtown Fort Pierce where the festivities ran long into the night. Me and my posse arrived late enough to avoid the body crush but right on time to kick back, breathe, and relax. Not to be outdone, there were two very special drafts pouring that night for those wise enough to venture unto JoJo’s. Direct from Brooklyn Brewery was a 2009 Monster Ale and equally direct from Terrapin Brewery, another vaunted Georgia brewery which has blossomed under the tender care of JJ Taylor Distributing (a fate I hope to see repeated with Sweetwater) was the Big Hoppy Monster. Yum and yum.

Eventually beered out, I switched to some faithful companions, Balvenie 12yr DoubleWood and Balvenie 15yr Single Barrel. Not beer per say, but before the scotch there must come beer, albeit primitively, and so I feel no shame, nay, pride in sharing my spirituous exploits that night. After all, something to savor slow and steady during a late night of friends and fun makes for a memorable experience long after the fact. We eventually called it a night at the cozy Knights Inn, a hop skip away from the beach. As an aside, I’d like to not thank Tim for taking the room with an ocean view while I got the rather morose view of the parking lot… But to get back on topic, as I reflect and reminisce, it is the most natural thing in the world to say that my life is better because of my dear friends with whom I shared many a beer and many a memory. To my BrewGrrs family, so glad you could make it and to lucky #4, Cheers and Salutations!

BEERflections ~ French Quarter Beer Dinner *September*

(not so long ago)

As fall creeps through the air, leaves rustle in colorful gossip and a chill knocks on your door, there exists a moment of breathless wonder at the unfolding beauty. Florida may lack the foliage but that just means less raking and more time to savor the flavors. One beer in particular exemplifies the harmony of Mother Nature and Humankind.

Orval.

Seasonal she is not thanks to year-round availability, but seasonal she is in the richness of harvest, tested by time, nurtured in patience, and relished with hushed reverence. If perfection is a myth, a transience of time, place, and person, than Orval is my perfection. Every time, every place I am humbled from the moment our eyes meet within her gilded chalice to the moment she crosses these lips in silent singular solace.

If I may be more exact, the most recent time and place was at The French Quarter in downtown Vero Beach on the 19th of September, 2010. The persons were yours beerly, the fabulously fantastic staff, my lovely Laura, and the beer curious souls who have generously embraced these beer dinners with open arms and a hearty appetite. If one hasn’t figured yet that Orval was one of the three stars to shine that night, consider this your illuminatory moment as I reveal the other two stars: Brooklyn Lager of Brooklyn Brewery in Brooklyn, New York and Midas Touch of Dogfish Head Brewery currently brewing in Milton, Delaware.

As for Orval, she is brewed at Abbaye D’Orval by and for the Trappist monks of Orval and for those outside of Belgium lucky enough to live where Orval is distributed and sold. The only Trappist ale to be the only Trappist ale, secular brewers toil alongside monks to brew true ‘God is good’ under the watchful eye of their head brewmaster of over 20 years, Jean-Marie Rock. For our dinner at French Quarter, harmony permeated all my senses as Orval’s idiosyncratic palate of rustic earthen tones, herbs, harvested sweet grains, citrus zip, and dry hoppy bitterness sung a chorus of flavor sensations alongside grilled wild steelhead salmon and gulf shrimp topped with an earthy fig balsamic drizzle. In accompaniment were fresh haricots verts (green beans for the culinary challenged) and just spicy enough horseradish mash. Together they were perfection realized and relished. The Trappist monks of Abbaye D’Orval and Jean-Marie Rock would approve.

But before the main course one needs an opening act to properly set the stage, a role the Brooklyn Lager performed admirably. Her partner-in-flavor was chicken and andouille spring rolls with sweet-spicy chili drizzles and a cool Asian slaw. After the main course must follow dessert, a temptress of indulgence the Midas Touch was reborn to do. Literally liquid history, Midas Touch was truly worthy of kings when paired with Ed’s homemade saffron ice cream with a side of moist lemon poppy seed cake.

Wow and yum thrice times over with an extra special moment of burgundian nirvana with my Orval inspired main course.

I’ve been to quite a few beer dinners in the last couple years, more than I ever thought possible based on the then meager beerscape of Florida and the Treasure Coast. Times, tastes, and appreciations are growing and though we are still very young, very fresh, there is a bright future of artisanal beer and food building and guiding us to tastetacular horizons. That being said, each and every dinner is integral to mine, yours, and our passion for continued flavorful diversity. I am proud to have French Quarter and her wonderful staff as a part of our taste revelation now and tomorrow. Goosebumps shiver at the thought of it and the heart races at the realization of it.

Just as another set of cherishable memories has passed, another beer dinner is cresting. I look forward to seeing many a friendly face and sharing many a priceless memory when our time comes once more. Cheers!

Improvisacion

Fellow Beer Lovers,
We earlier anticipated having the Improvisacion ready to be poured in the tasting room this week and hoped the bottles would be on their way to accounts as we speak however it will be delayed by a few weeks. For everyone who was eagerly awaiting it's release we are very sorry but sometimes we are at the mercy of the beer gods and they weren't ready for us to enjoy this one just yet. Bear with us and it will be available soon.

Bolita bottles are now available, we also have a few kegs of Humidor IPA and some very special Saison kegs pouring in the tap room. Come out and give them a try!

Gallon growlers should be back by the end of next week.

Cheers!

BEERflections ~ Oskar Blues Tasting @ Hurricanes VB

(late is the new on time)

Two Oskar Blues events in one week?! Life is truly good and yes, it really is all about the beer.

On September 1st, the almighty can descended once more upon the state of Florida, Vero Beach specifically, to slake the thirsts of beer drinkers plenty. At least, that’s what normally happens. Not sure why what who or how, but for the first time in all the beer tasting events at Hurricanes VB I have reveled in, there were very few of my peeps to revel with. Too bad so sad because the drafts flowed and partake of them I did most generously. Typically the tastings consist of a draft, maybe two, with the rest of the beers in bottle, or in the case of Oskar Blues, the most glorious can. Being the first craft cannery, Oskar Blues of Lyons, Colorado made canned beer beautiful again, not just in the snazzy new can design (no nasty tinny taste) but also in the beautifully delicious beers inside. A keg is kind of like a can, albeit slightly larger, and so myself and others savored in cantacular purpose Mama’s Little Yella Pils, Dales Pale Ale, Gordon, Old Chub Scottish Ale, and the piece-de-la-resistance, Gubna.

Yum, yum, yum, yum, and yum!

I’m not sure what was in the air, but we were all quite mischievously raucous that night, more so than usual. As families trickled in, we tuned the silliness down a smidge as to keep from accidentally upsetting the children and the parents. We are always the considerate professionals and while Hurricanes VB may serve beer, they are also a family-friendly destination and that's the way it will always be.

Tim was there of course, and I eventually ran into a few familiar faces in the vision of Patrick, Steve, Jessie, Roger, and Jeremy. Not as many of my posse far and wide but that just meant more beer for us and a welcome chance to convert the beerly deprived. After all, once the flavor bug bites and diversity calls, there is no going back to the bland flavorless faceless baseless macro brands. Regarding lagers and/or pilsners specifically, Mama’s Little Yella Pils proves they do and should have flavor, character, and class just as they did a few hundred years ago when the golden lager/pilsner was born to tasteful acclaim.

Digression aside, myself, Tim, Ron, Howard, Nicole, Al, Antonio, and a host of other Hurricane VB staff made merry for hours on end. There were even some lucky raffle ticket winners who went home with a pair of Ten Fidy Imperial Stout cans. Dark and delicious, this beer geek might have suffered beer envy if she didn’t already have a few cans of Ten Fidy in the fridge, patiently awaiting her thirsty attentions. As our evening wound up, down, and around, the clock struck ten and my chariot waited. Okay, Honda Civic, but it’s all in the imagination my friends and for all of you who were absent, imagine away because you lost out on a crankin' good time. Don’t believe me? Just watch the slideshow below.

Until next time, cheers!

Hurricanes VB Welcomes Ballast Point Brewing to Florida *TODAY*

Coming up Wednesday, October 13th, Hurricanes of Vero Beach, FL is welcoming Ballast Point Brewing to the Treasure Coast in style along with Vine & Barley of St. Lucie County (see previous post) and they are doing it ALL. DAY. LONG.

5 different drafts on special at $3.00 a pint from open to close, 5 brand new drafts exclusive to Florida through the fabulous folks at JJTaylor. Only eleven accounts in FL are premiering these award winning beers and awards they have won. Ballast Point won 3 gold medals at the 2010 World Beer Cup for their Bourbon Barrel Aged Piper Down Scottish Ale, Fathom IPL, and Sculpin IPA. Ballast Point won Champion Brewery in the Small Craft Brewery Category and tied with Baird Brewing of Japan for most number of Gold medals awarded to one brewery.

Suffice to say Ballast Point and her brew crew know good beer. They also know fishing and fish as evidenced by the fish and nautical inspired beer names and their very own fishing team. Florida knows a bit about fish and, fishing which makes Ballast Point a perfect fit in this Florida native's mind. Goodness knows I've spent my fair share of time on the ocean casting, trolling, and bottom fishing.

But enough about me. Let's talk about YOU Wednesday at Hurricanes VB for good beers, good food, and good times.

As an aside, Wednesday is THE premiere day. No matter how badly you will want to bring home a 6pack of your favorite tasty beer, Ballast Point doesn't go on sale at your favorite beer-tail location (be sure to ask for it!) until Thursday.

*   *   *   *   *   *

A little bit about Ballast Point and their beers:

During his college years, young Jack White developed a taste for beer. So he did what any red-blooded American beer lover would do... open a brewery! And in 1996, Ballast Point Brewing was born.
Naming the beers was easy. Jack and his partner both love fishing & beer. So they brought the two together and started naming their beers after fish. After all, regular guys doing what they love-that's what this was all about. Today, the beer labels still have fish on them as homage to the brewery's origins, and as a reminder to always do what you love.
Almost 15 years after its inception, Ballast Point Brewing's dedicated team of craftsmen (and women) is still innovating, trying new methods and ingredients, and working constantly to increase capacity to try to meet demand. More than anything, they are staying true to Jack's dream, and their own: Real beer lovers making real, good beer.
Sculpin IPA
The Sculpin is a testament to the humble beginnings at Ballast Point. Recently winning a gold medal at the World Beer Cup, Sculpin showcases bright flavors and aromas of apricot, peach, mango & lemon. The lighter body also brings out the crispness of the hops. The Sculpin fish has poisonous spikes on its fins that can give a strong sting. Ironically, the meat from a Sculpin is considered some of the tastiest. Something that has a sting but tastes great? Sounds like a Ballast Point India Pale Ale.

Big Eye IPA
If you love India Pale Ales, Big Eye will be a welcome addition to your repertoire. You'll revel in Big Eye's bitter, hoppy flavor thanks to the American Columbus and Centennial hops that are used to flavor and dry hop their flagship IPA.

Yellow Tail Pale Ale
There's no wonder why their Pale Ale is so popular-it is skillfully crafted in the style of the Kolsch beers of Cologne, Germany. They've chosen German hops for aroma, and rounded out the recipe with a blend of American and German malts. If you like a lighter brew but also like the complexity of craft beers, then Yellow Tail Pale Ale is for you.
Calico Amber Ale
Inspired by traditional English ESBs, Calico Amber Ale is as American as it could be. A rich complexity comes from four types of malt-but it's those distinct American hops that offer a crisp bitterness and unique floral aroma. To round out the traditional-English-yet-very-American Amber Ale, they use a proprietary yeast to develop a fruity, Madeira-like richness.

Wahoo Wheat
Summer days and ocean waves inspired this Belgian Witbier-styled Wahoo Wheat. Brewed to be light and refreshing-with a unique citrus character that comes from adding orange peel and coriander to the boil. A special yeast contributes to this beer's refreshing tangy flavor-quite different from the banana and clovey Hefe-Weizens of Bavaria.

BEERflections ~ Oskar Blues Brewmaster Dinner @ Town Crier Pub

(better late than never)

I used to struggle miserably to scrap together just a meager handful of beery events in a year much less in a month to attend with celebratory glee. Now I have to revive long dormant skills of organization by noting what’s what and when’s when on my dry erase board of beerful prophecy. For instance, the recent and more than slightly passed Oskar Blues Brewmaster Dinner at the fantabulous Town Crier Pub, home to good food, beer, spirits, and a just wonderful staff. I and my posse of peeps were deliciously hosted on the last Monday of August from 7pm till whenever the food took us in blingtacular fashion.

Typically a five course extravaganza, this one executed a little twist by adding a sixth minor addition of Humulus Lupulus proportions; the Gubna. I’m not talking politics but the beer itself, an Imperial IPA and the newest addition to Oskar Blues portfolio. Furthering the twist was his standing as the first course, a daring move that paid off in spades thanks largely to the dreamy creamy Tzatziki sauce. I’ve partaken of quite a few Gubna since its inception, but never had it tasted quite as it did whilst mingling with the lingering essence of spicy marinated beef skewers dipped in said dreamy creamy Tzatziki sauce. Truly a taste phenom and seeing as we are all Brewmaster Dinner professionals, a snappy hop bomb didn’t deter myself and everyone else from the courses to come.

By destiny the dessert typically reins supreme, furthering proof that as burgundians we all cannot resist the siren’s call of scintillating indulgence…not that I’d want to. But then there was the Cajun Gumbo paired with the Mama’s Little Yella Pils. My mama always used to say “Eat your vegetables!” which as a younger lass was never very easy, but on all my family’s gross-out list was the slimy squishy stinky swampy okra. And then there was the Cajun Gumbo. A stew straight from the heart of Cajun country, in her belly simmered shrimp, andouille sausage, and fresh okra served over the always fantastically aromatic and herbal Jasmine rice. Hands down it was my favorite course of the night. With each bite followed a quaff and with each quaff followed a bite as flavors melted into each other seamlessly, perfectly. There was literally no distinction between an end or a beginning. There was only beer and food harmony. Even now she relives in my mind’s eye, the moment when I fell in love with okra, even if only for the duration of those long languid moments.

Not to say that the rest of the courses weren’t daring excursions into flavor country, but the orgy of beer and food is ultimately a personal one, rightfully so. Tis what makes us unique and what makes a gathering of unique beers, unique food, and unique individuals so very special. It is this unity of disparity which makes humanity and civilization great, to be celebrated always and forever.

But I profess…

From the Cajun Gumbo and Mama’s Little Yella Pils onward, my five senses reveled in pairing after pairing:
  • Dales Pale Ale with homemade empanada shells bursting with skirt steak twice cooked to mouth melting tenderness nestled amidst Sofrito, garlic, tomatoes, and Manchego cheese.
  • Gordon, a sticky red ale, meets a soft flour tortilla wrapped around marinated skirt steak, fresh guacamole, pico de gallo, rice, sharp cheddar cheese, and cilantro sour cream, all resting atop pureed black beans for the ultimate fajita indulgence.
  • Old Chub Scottish Ale parried and almost lost to the truly red hot Town Crier Chili with lamb, sausage, beans, and a stout beer infusion while an avocado puree drizzled over the top did little to ease the burn. Less heat, a smidge more meaty sweetness, a hint more smoke, and this pairing would have fared better.
  • Ten Fidy Imperial Stout meets Ten Fidy Tiramisu in a scandalous tryst of moan-inducing proportions which included Ten Fidy dipped (more like soaked) lady fingers, Ten Fidy infused Dulce de Leche drizzle, and topped with a cream so light to make the heavens jealous.

Hungry yet?

As the evening wound down, so too did my posse of peeps amidst the gentle glow of night and the soft hum of blissful contentment. Our desserts snarfed, seat-backs were rediscovered for the slow pleasure of savoring our appropriately warmed Ten Fidy and each other’s company. A Brewmaster Dinner first for Dave, I do believe another burgundian has been born. Now to keep the passion stoked… I missed saying goodnight to Tim along with a job well done in presenting the beers while once more George Citron displayed his culinary prowess in soft spoken artistry. To Dave Nardi, JW, and everyone for an evening well remembered, thank you. See you soon!

Celebrating the Women of Ybor CIty with Bolita!

Join us this Thursday from 6pm-9pm for the Women of Ybor Art Exhibition at the Ybor City Museum State Park.

This event is part of a year long celebration of the women who have impacted Ybor City in the past, present, and future. We will be on hand and pouring samples of the newest batch of Bolita Double Nut Brown Ale taking in the sights! The HCC Jazz band and Dancers will be performing throughout the night. There will be appetizers served, and a cash bar will be available to purchase Jai-Alai IPA and Maduro Brown Ale as well as other beverages.

From what I am told there will actually be a game of Bolita played during the event. Not just a clever name for a very tasty beer, this game which came to Tampa in the 1880's is as much a part of this Ybor City's history as the renegade chickens that roam the neighborhood streets! I am thinking there won't be any mobsters around "fixing" the game; so it should be fun to give it a try. Tickets are $10 in advance and $12.50 at the door.
For more info, click here.

Speaking of fun! As quite a few of you already know, we recently hosted a few of our fellow brewers from both Vermont and Denmark for a few days in September to work on a series of beers yet to be released. This was mentioned in an article on craftbeer.com you can
find here telling the tales of some very popular colla"BEER"ations you might have tried as well as a few that are yet to hit the market. Collaborating with other brewers is not only fun for all involved, but also helps to gain insight to processes and techniques of other small brewers worldwide. Having these guys in our brewery and sharing the artistic input results in a beer that captures the passion and devotion of all of us to our craft and it's a great thing to share with those you admire. Not to get sentimental or anything.. Still, the beer is amazing and coming soon!

Looking for something to do this weekend? Check us out at theDunedin Blue Jays Stadium BeerFest sponsored by the Dunedin House ofBeers! Come and taste over 100 different brews including a few goodiesfrom the CCB Brew Crew from 4pm-8pm this Saturday (Oct. 16th)! Tickets can bepurchased at both local House of Beer locations (Dunedin and PalmHarbor) or from the box office at the Dunedin Stadium Box Office.

On Tap this Week in the Tasting Room:

  • Jai-Alai IPA
  • Maduro Brown Ale
  • Cubano Espresso
  • Oatmeal Raisin Cookie
  • Rye Porter
  • SeaBass Dark Farmhouse Style Ale
  • Marshal Zhukov's Imperial Stout

Guest Beers:

  • St. Somewhere Pays du Soleil
  • Dunedin Brewery Celtic Gold Ale
  • Southern Tier 'Mokah' Stout

There should be a few new beers on tap in the tasting room soon.Improvization is due out sometime this week and Bolita should followpretty soon after. We will keep you posted as soon as we know when theywill be available.

Have a great week!

Cheers!

Corner Cafe & Brewery 2nd Anniversary Celebration

The details for this years Corner Cafe celebration will surely trickle in and as I get them, so too will all of you, my fabulous beer peeps and peepettes. Considering how deliciously bodacious the 1st Anniversary was couple with Matt's work-in-progress, Tequesta Brewing Co., I sense epicness upon the very near horizon.

Welcome Our New Tasting Room Head Pilot Brewer: Ben Romano
A while back we acquired a small 45 gallon (just shy of 1 /12 bbl) pilot system. The goal was to use this smaller system to create test batches and interesting one-offs exclusively for the Tasting Room and select accounts. The system can brew roughly 6-9 sixtels (5.17 gallons) worth of beer, per batch. We have 1, 41 gallon and 2, 80 gallon fermenters for the system. Meaning we can have just over 6 bbls of brew going at any one time. Not astounding volumes if you are considering distribution, but to augment our regular lineup with interesting one-offs and as a way to test potential larger scale batches, it's a solid little system.

We were however missing one key ingredient. A dedicated brewer. Tim, Wayne and Doug are all pretty busy these days on the production side and don't have time for additional small-batch duties. So we turned to our buddy Ben Romano. Bay Area beer geeks will know Ben from Southern Brew Supply and from his efforts to launch Zen Brewing. Ben will be handling all small batch duties and his first efforts will be to brew up some session strength beers such as Milds and table strength Saisons. Expect to see some lager experiments as well.

The vast majority of the beer Ben creates will be Tasting Room only, though select accounts will occasionally see kegs. We are happy to have Ben and can't wait to touch our lips tot he first batch of his brew.

Cheers,

Joey and the CCB Team
