Undertow Update
Just ran into Ziggy at the store who filled me in on some Undertow updates.
*They will be reopening/having their soft opening this coming Thursday.
*Ziggy will still be manning the bar with his mad zany skillz.
*Menu will be changed; how much I don't know yet.
*Lots of paintings and yes, the wave is still there.
So, in a couple weeks or so I plan to revisit, sup a few brews, taste a few nibblies, and finally get a BEERport on Undertow, albeit post-Kitty.

Deadliest Catch Countdown
It's going to be a particularly tough season knowing of Captain Phil's passing, but Dad and I will faithfully watch each weekly episode with a brew in hand as we always do. I haven't decided what special beer we will crack open for Phil's honorary episode, but I have a few weeks to figure it out.
Each season Dad and I get together and have some quality father+daughter time while watching one of the still coolest shows on Discovery: Deadliest Catch. Each evening I bring a different special beer over for me and Dad to share. So long as it doesn't require a spoon (ie: no brown ales, porters, or stouts) than Dad is game to giving it a whirl around the ol' tastebuds.
Seeing as this coming Tuesday, April 13th is the season premier, I think I'll bring over the Southampton Saison Deluxe. I just got it in, tis a brew for the seasons, and we are starting a new season...corny but appropriate. Of course, I have no doubt the beer will be fanfreakingtastic which is just the way I like it, and Dad will too.
Too crab fishing. To Captain Phil. To family. To beer.
Prosit!

Beer Styles & Shmyles
Beer for me will always be about flavor. You can slap whatever name, style, picture, etc on it you want but so long as I can get my flavor on than all is well in my beer quaffing world. It's wonderful that brewers and judges have guidelines upon which to create and to evaluate. It's beautiful, even. But when guidelines become rigid rules that stymie and suppress a brewer's creativity, a judges ability to fairly evaluate a brew, and a beer drinkers ability, nay right, to enjoy said beers whenever, however, and in whatever flavor imaginable than I dare say things are getting a wee bit out of hand.
Style conflicts aside for a moment, yes I still plan on furthering my knowledge and professionalism in regards to beer, brewing, styles, and judging. I haven't settled on my next goal for this year since receiving my Cicerone Beer Server Certification, but I have a few ideas. As much as it pains me to say, Siebel and their Master of Beer Styles and Evaluation program will have to wait till next year. Money you see, it's a fickle thing. But there are other possibilities to keep the ol' Kristyn Beer Train on track. BJCP Certification and Home Brewing are fighting for eventual wallet domination in this fine year of 2010. Shall see...
Of course both roll me right back into the world of styles and style guidelines. For example: the Iniquity from Southern Tier which we tasted yesterday at work. Awesome beer. Southern Tier calls it an Imperial Black Ale/IPA. RateBeer calls it an American Strong Ale (another dubiously generic style of wide-ranging proportions) and BeerAdvocate calls it an American Double/Imperial IPA. Which is right? Which is wrong? Does it really matter?
Personally, not so much. Styles are useful but sometimes highly overrated. Tasting a little bit of all the above in my Iniquity, I simply call it fanfreakingtastic. Tasty. Yummy. Flavorific.
And for me, that's really all I need.
Brew on. Drink on. Get your flavor on.
May I have another please.

Stoudts Brewing & Mother Earth
**every day should be Earth Day - kristyn**
Here at Stoudt's, we try to do as much as we can to promtoe a happy and healthy Mother Earth. The less impact we have on the environment, the better off we'll all be in the future. With our new edition, The Wonderful Good Market, we are trying to set an example not only in promoting and consuming organic and local food, but also by limiting our intake of natural resources. We put in brand new solar panels, which dramatically cuts our electricity use. This is an amazing new asset in our increasing needs to conserve our resources. By providing local food, we can rely less on the commercial food industry and gasoline consumption, as well as the outsourcing of our local farmers and food purveyors. On a different level, the Market provides a local book share, where you can borrow and share your own books with others in the community. We have also introduced a thrift store, providing affordable clothing to the greater community.
The brewery is also playing a major role in being ecologically aware...and on so many levels! Our spent grain has been feeding our farm friends for years, a classic win-win situation for everybody. This is an obvious win-win situation for everybody. The grain provides nutrient-rich food for local animals. It is also a great compost element, proven to grow large and numerous worms in Ed Stoudt's compost, providing rich nutrients and earthworms for his beloved Dahlia garden. The worms also provide great treats for his pet duck, Donald. Also, by coming in for a pint at the bar, or purchasing a keg rather than cases, responsible drinkers are greatly depleting the amount of bottles, as well as the energy, which goes into processing those bottles at the recycling center. On a larger scale, the brewery is currently working on a glycol (chilling) system for the Lager Cellar and two of our fermentation rooms. This new system will greatly reduce our energy consumption with regard to cooling and maintaining temperatures in the fermentors. We are also in the process of putting in motion-sensitive lighting in our warehouses, limiting our overall electricity intake.
You're all probably wondering how antiquing can affect the environment. There has been a re-emergence in buying used goods from thrift stores and summertime yard sales. It not only feels great to get something cool for a steal, but it also slows the demand of manufactured products from outsourced companies. Rather than throw away, we can all re-use, swap, and mend what we have. Rather than buying brand new goods, why not buy used furniture, clothing, and trinkets, …after all, they were probably made better back in the day. Plus, you get a one of a kind look for your home and garden. There's some-thing special about antiques in that they provide rich stories of personal histories, and the element of one object being used by various people, which connects all of us on a more personal level.
We try to do our part in every aspect of business at Stoudt's, and we encourage all of you to do the same. This Earth Day, if we all pitch in, we can enhance our Earth's well being in so many wonderful ways. As consumers, we have the power to change the world and make it a better place for generations to come!
Cheers!

Humidor Series: Gedanken Gruit
I've learned that with some folks the less they know about a thing, the more they'll be sure they know everything that could ever be known about it. And such was the case with Humidor Series: Gruit. No one alive today has ever had a wide range of honest to goodness Medieval era Gruit Ales. Which means pretty much every "Gruit ale" brewed on the planet today is a guess. But apparently some people are allowed to be guessers, while we are not allowed to be. So I am re-nicknaming Humidor Series: Gruit, to Humidor Series: Gedanken Gruit.
A Gedanken is a proposal for a thought experiment that would test a hypothesis. We had the hypothesis that if you were going to brew a beer with an abundant source of anti-microbial wood like Cedrela you might have something Gruit-like. Fools that we are, we thought we were allowed to do such a thing.
Anyway, we are happy with what we came up with. It's a very different kind of a beer. It has a bit of a wildness to it, but it is fairly drinkable at the same time. It's not like anything we have ever made. What exactly it is, from a "I must classify this or I will stay awake nights" point of view I can't really say. But, I think it qualifies as Gruit-like. Now if you happen to be say, Merlin and have been keeping yourself alive for generations using some truly righteous Gruit-esque concoctions then by all means share your personal experiences. But, if you don't have fond memories of quaffing honest-to-goodness real Gruit beer back when it was actually all that was going in the beer world, please allow us a little bit of conjecture.
Cheers,
The CCB Staff.

Mission Accomplished: Spring Cleaning
Now that I am 99.9% done with spring cleaning my the apartment, I can once more direct my attentions to the backlog of thoughts, ramblings, and reflections my muse has been storing for me. As much as I wanted to write this week because goodness knows my mind is not for want of topics, it's hard in good conscience to concentrate when surrounded by a dirty filthy apartment...at least, by my anal retentive neat freak obsessive compulsive standards.
No. Really. Ask my friends and relatives and they will wholeheartedly agree.
And so with apartment clean and Mr. D losing his winter coat (thank goodness for vacuums), starting Monday I can once more put pen to paper and let the muse flow. First and foremost, my BEERflections on the Brooklyn Brewery Brewmasters Dinner at the Town Crier Pub.
Prosit!

Cigar City Invasion ~ part 02
Brand spankin new to the shelves as of today is the Big Sound Scotch Ale and Humidor Series Jai Alai IPA. The Humidor Series Jai Alai IPA is the beer which won Cigar City Brewing the gold medal at the 2009 Great American Beer Fest in Denver, Colorado.
I got in 3 cases of the Humidor and 2 cases of Big Sound. Get em while you can. I've got my bottles already set aside to take home. Delish!

14th EDITION OF THE PERFECT SUMMER BEER-FARMHOUSE SUMMER ALE
Hard to believe this tasty stuff is now entering its 14th summer. That's good for all of us! Our Farmhouse Summer Ale is on its way out to your favorite retailer and tavern as you read this. The perfect summer beer, Farmhouse Ale is brewed with pale malt, a small percentage of wheat and single-hopped with imported Styrian Golding hops. It's a tribute to the "everyday" Farmhouse beers of Belgium (but it's not a Saison - no fruit, herbs or spices). A sour mash gives this beer its signature dryness and great drinkability. The Farmhouse is also available in 1/6 and 1/2 kegs. If you don't see it, ask your local retailer for it.
EXIT 16 WILD RICE DOUBLE IPA NOW OUT AND ABOUT
Although usually identified with landfills and pipelines, the Hackensack Meadowlands is an amazingly diverse ecosystem providing vital animal and plant habitat. In a nod to a once common food plant here, we have brewed this beer with wild rice. We also added organic brown and white rice, as well as pils and pale malts. Rice helps the beer ferment dry to better showcase the five different hops we added. Lots and lots of them. We then dry-hopped this Double IPA with even more generous additions of Chinook and Citra hops to create a nose that hints at tangerine, mango, papaya and pine. This beer pairs extremely well with spicy foods and all kinds of seafood. And of course, it is quite enjoyable all by itself. If you want to learn more about the restoration of the Meadowlands, visit HackensackRiverkeeper.org

De Molen Brew News
**So, why am I posting brew news for Brouwerij De Molen when they are in Bodegraven, Netherlands? Simply because their beers are fantastically delicious and distributed in the USofA, albeit in small scattered quantities. Should you ever luckily stumble across any of their beers, buy as many as your wallet will allow. Trust. You'll thank me later.**
Borefts Beer Festival 2010
Make sure you mark it in your agenda: September 24th and 25th. That's when the second Borefts Beer Festival will take place. The first brewers attending are known already. On are website you can find all other information you'll need.
It's Spring!
Burgundian Spring indulgence in our restaurant with the new Menu Card. Have a look and come by for a joyful time and a great meal.
More webpages
We thought it was high time to introduce ourselves properly and to show the brewing process on our website. That's why we added the Brewers & Brewing page to the Brewery section. Another new part of the website is Stories. On our quests for cooperation, new ideas and beer we have quite some fun and encounter interesting people and situations. Read about them in this section.
Great British Beer Festival
The GBBF 2010 will take place from August 3rd until 7th this year. And we will be there again. This time with not 1, not 2, but 3 wooden barrels with wonderful oak aged beers.
Cheers,
Brouwerij de Molen.

WARNING: DO NOT DRINK VICTORY HOP DEVIL AND VICTORY PRIMA PILS
This is a blanket notice to all drinkers of Victory Hop Devil and Prima Pils in the Treasure Coast: do NOT buy any 6packs (or singles) you see in retail stores/bars/restaurants. They are OUT. OF. DATE.
I repeat, they are OUT! OF! DATE!
Technically the Prima Pils will be out of date on the 10th, but that's only 4 days from now and seeing as Southern Eagle is STILL placing to this very day, literally T.O.D.A.Y., out of date Victory Hop Devil and close-dated Prima Pils in whatever locations they can, it is obvious (and of no surprise to me) that quality control and good business practices are of zero concern while dastardly deeds continue to reign unchecked.
Even more so, the pitiable lack of care and concern Southern Eagle and now, apparently, Victory Brewing has shown for the beer drinkers of Vero Beach who desire a fresh and tasty bottle of Victory Hop Devil and Victory Prima Pils after a long days work, out fishing with buddies, with friends, etc... is now clear as day.
As much as I love(d) their beers, Victory that is, I cannot in good heart endorse their products for as long as such poorly managed, administered, and executed beer business practices continue unadulterated and unaddressed by Victory Brewing and Southern Eagle. Consider this my fond farewell until I personally see a change otherwise.
Am I upset? Yes. Rightfully so. And you should be, too.

Humidor Series: Gruit is Ready!
The latest entry in the Spanish Cedar-aged Humidor Series of brews goes on tap in the Tasting Room on Wednesday 4-7-10. Our take on a Gruit this beer is brewed using our Spanish Cedar in place of hops. The base beer is a pale ale and it comes in around 5.5% ABV. Humidor Series: Gruit is light of body, medium sweet with cereal grain notes and lightly spicy due to the Spanish Cedar. It is aa session-gruit (if we can make up terms for a moment) and an ideal warm weather brew.
Humidor Series: Gruit will be released mostly in draft in the Central Florida area (draft and growlers available at the CCB Tasting Room) with very limited 750 ml bottles for sale in the same footprint. This beer is designed to drink fresh, so it is advised that you do not age this beer.
Cheers,
CCB Team

Weyerbacher Brew News
News:
We’re hoping for late April to begin distribution in Minnesota! We’ll post more information on our website as things finalize, we’re finishing up contract details now. Finally, you can have a Weyerbacher with your Juicy Lucy!
From Head Brewer - Chris Wilson:
Spring has sprung! I was not expecting the fast switch to warmer weather, but that is exactly what happened. Maybe it is because we brewed Blanche a little early this year. The seasons are slaves to the brew schedule, right? I’ll have to try this out again next year.
Juliet will be released mid-April. It is a Doppelsticke, 8.5% ABV. The Germans say it "dopple-shtick-uh", so should you! It is a Double Alt. Alts have a long history in Germany and specifically in the town of Düsseldorf. Not too cold and not too hot, Düsseldorf has the perfect climate for brewing this refreshingly crisp ale. Alts fall in at around 4.7% and have a clean malty flavor with substantial hop presence. Take that and double it and you get a beer that is both richly malty and pleasantly hoppy. Due to cool fermentation and conditioning, the beer has the clean lager-like profile.
Dan, Chris Lampe and I will be heading off to the Craft Brewers Conference in Chicago on April 6th. We have to go get our schoolin’ on the latest brewing techniques and information. There is a slight chance that we might squeeze in a few beers with our brewing brethren as well. The first day of events always includes tours of “local” breweries. I am looking forward to our tour of Three Floyds Brewing Co. Maybe, we’ll get them to cough up some Dark Lord a little early. I think we are also hitting Flossmoor Station, Granite City and Gordon Biersch. They will likely be tasty as well.
Look for an announcement this month regarding the launch of our new website. We have made a tremendous amount of improvements and made a real effort to make the site interactive. More to the point, we want you guys to be able to communicate with us and get information from us much more easily. When the announcement comes out, I encourage you to take a look at it and tell us what you think!
Coming up we have Kilo on the horizon. I can’t say what we are doing because it is not official yet (legally approved I mean – better not take a chance on that these days), but I will say that it will be a nice refreshing beer for summer. We will release the beer to coincide with Philly Beer Week in June. That will also be the time you’ll be able to get your hands on some Fifteen for the first time. It is going to be awesome!
From Production Manager - Chris Lampe:
Blanche has been bottled and is being sent out to distributors!!! This is my spring lawnmower beer (and it should be yours too!). Tiny (the next in the Cork ‘N Cage Series) is also in the bottle and is just about finished conditioning. The whole crew here has had a month of hand bottling and corking this beauty, so you should be looking for it on the shelves very soon.

Putting Craft Beer Back in Hurricane Grille & Wings
**In response to Diana Foote's review of Hurricane Grille & Wings, Vero Beach, I could not sit idly by and let such a sad discretion of beer discrimination/neglect go by unnoticed. And so, I post here my letter back to Diana regarding her article incomplete on Hurricanes, Wings, and Beer.**
Good morning and good day. The name is Kristyn Lier and beer is what I do. You could rightfully say it is my life and I am quite proud to say that. No, I’m not a lush, boozer, alcoholic or person with issues. I am an appreciator of the rich diversity of flavor, culture, history, and the ever personable human story behind beer. Did you know that beer is the world’s oldest alcoholic beverage? Yes, long before mankind was drinking wine or water or soda or juice, man was brewing, drinking, and celebrating beer partly as a heavenly gift, partly as a social release, and partly because it was a pleasurable flavorful experience. I live life with flavor and right now more than ever beer is all about flavor. As much as possible, as diverse as possible, and it’s only getting better. Wine? Paf! You can have it. Beer is the better pairing partner for food hands down and it’s a dirty little secret that oenophiles and sommeliers will only tell you in the darkly lit alleyway of a nondescript street in the middle of the night.
But I digress.
I am not just a beer aficionado, I am also a foodie. What better way to savor a luscious beer than with food equally stimulating and luscious to my palate. I was pleased as punch to read your glowing review of Hurricane Grille & Wings here in Vero Beach, FL, my hometown where I was born and raised. Their wings are rightfully plump, their sauce flavors as diverse as they are tasty, and their beer selection is the best you will find here in Vero Beach. Wait a minute… I don’t recall reading a single iota of a mention of their fabulous beer selection in your review.
Hang on, let me check…
Nope, not a single letter, word, or sentence about the 30+ draft lines featuring 30 different beers of which over 90% are of the artisanal crafted flavorful variety. Now THAT is a crying shame. Food is all well and good, but there is more to the food experience than that which one inserts in one’s mouth (besides the proverbial foot at times). It’s food. It’s drink. It’s ambience. It’s service. It’s the human connection which transforms an average brick&mortar joint into a place I call home. That is the Hurricanes Grille & Wings of Vero Beach experience which has brought me back into her tender embrace after at least a year’s absence due to the absence of good beer diversity. But now the wings are as good as I remember if not better, and the beer is a little slice of heaven in a town drowning in flavorless macro light lagers without a wit of personality and appeal.
I know Howard and his staff is proud of their establishment, service, and menu rich within wings and other tasty food stuffs. I also know they are extremely proud of their beer selection. Ask any staff member about the beers and their eyes will light up while gifted words of prose will flow from eager lips like water off a mountain’s face. Howard and friends aren’t done yet, either. More beers (draft lines) are planned which means more diversity of flavor which means more selection which means even more beers for me to pair with their 30+ flavors of sauces. Not just the wings, but their salads, burgers, and wraps OH MY! all scream for a slightly chilled beverage of beery designs. The flavor? Depends on what I am in the mood for and what I am eating. But I know without a doubt I will have at least a few options if not more to more than enhance my beer foodie experience.
Hurricane Grille & Wings of Vero Beach is the only Hurricanes in which you can find such a wonderfully diverse palate of beers along with a wonderfully diverse group of people who enjoy them. You can travel north. You can travel south. You can travel inbetween. No other Hurricanes has the wonderful variety that my hometown does and I’m very proud of that. They feature on any given day at least a dozen different styles of beers, dozens more with different flavors, and rotate the taps on a regular basis. I know when I walk into my Vero Beach Hurricanes I can find pale ales, amber ales, pilsners, lagers, brown ales, porters, stouts, American wheat beers, Hefeweizens, Belgian wits, IPAs, strong ales, and many more. Some are spicy, some floral, herbal, sweet, chocolately, roasty, hoppy, citrusy, fruity… the list goes on. You want to talk flavor to pair with those wings? There can be only one: beer.
And so as pleased as I was to see Hurricanes get a positive review in the Press Journal, for myself and dozens of other Vero Beach citizens, a sad disservice was done in not mentioning their beer selection. Thankfully, I’ve got that covered. The opportunity vibrancy and life of good beer diversity is here in Vero Beach and we aren’t going anywhere. Just as we enjoy flavor in other aspects of our life, so too do we enjoy it in our beer. Even better, we like to share that love and it shows in how well Hurricanes has done since embracing real beer diversity. If next time you’re in Hurricanes and you see a buzzed head lady at the bar (or at a table) laughing with friends and staff, beer in hand, food in front, be sure to stop by and say hi. Even better, grab a chair and we’ll share a beer or two. It’s on me.
